2023 Hyundai Sonata
This year drew an ordinary 100 complaints for a Hyundai Sonata — the model's median is 425. What they were about is the unusual part: 23% of them mention wouldn, against 8.9% across the other years of this generation.
Generation 4 of the Hyundai Sonata, which began in 2020. Everything below compares this year against the others in that generation, not against a different car wearing the same name.
NHTSA opened a defect investigation into this model year.

What the complaints were about
- wouldn — 23% of this year's complaints, against 8.9% across the other years of this generation (2.6×). Owners wrote it as: wouldn, let, much, misfire.
- lane — 16% of this year's complaints, against 5.8% across the other years of this generation (2.8×). Owners wrote it as: lane, possible, slowing, pressed.
- drivers — 12% of this year's complaints, against 4.5% across the other years of this generation (2.7×). Owners wrote it as: drivers, 3rd, asked, 3rd time.
Words owners used for the same problem are counted together, so a fault written four different ways is measured once. Grouped by which complaints they appear in, not by a list anyone wrote in advance.
What owners wrote
This is the 3rd time it happened to me. I was driving on the highway at speed 60-70 and a flash came across my dash that said emergency brake warning and my car started slowing down. I panicked and pulled over the road. The warning came on so fast and not even…
Vehicle’s front collision sensor popped up on dash, vehicle lost all power. Almost was hit by a group a semi trucks hauling a wide load that wouldn’t have been able to stop in time. This is the 3rd time it has happened in a week and a half.

How this was worked out
Every year of the Hyundai Sonata was compared against its own history rather than against other cars, which removes popularity and age from the answer — a common car draws more complaints at equal reliability, and an older one has had longer to accumulate them. A year is flagged when it drew at least 2.5× this model's median and at least 50 complaints.
This is a fault record, not a review. Nobody files a federal complaint to say the car was fine, so it shows what tends to go wrong — not whether owners liked it, and not whether it is a good car.
